Last year when I was getting married I learned about Halo hair extensions. They are basically hair extensions that are on a wire and they cause 0 damage and aren't uncomfortable to wear like clip ins can be. Of course I was stoked! The only downfall was ones I wanted were like $500. I was not about to just buy them on a whim because you guys, that's $500 dollars and weddings are not cheap!
I got out my old clip ins that I made, cut off the clips, and did some research.
Once I looked around a little, I learned these are so easy to make yourself for LESS than $100! Sassy hair (found here) is really good hair to use and it is ON SALE right now! Satin Strands (found here) is slightly more expensive but it is a little better than Sassy hair and comes in 22" long :) These are both found at Sally's but honestly you can get good hair a lot of other places! I just like going into Sally's because I can see the hair and feel it to decided if I want that certain brand or not.
I have been wearing hair extensions since I was 16 years old! I just love how they make my hair super long and thick!! I usually buy the hair wefts with nothing on them and then cut them in sections to match the width of normal clip in wefts and then sew on clips! I tell ya, I will learn to do anything to save some money haha. I liked sewing on clips better because I could make my wefts thick by double layering the wefts! I feel like pre-clipped ones are usually kind of thin.
So on to how to make your own gorgeous halo for under $100:
1. Make sure the hair you use is REMY hair (aka real human hair, not synthetic) Synthetic hair cannot be colored or styled with heat because it's basically plastic and looks fake anyways. The two I linked are great real remy human hair and perfect for this!
2. I color mine to match my hair perfectly (or as close as possible!)
3. I only wash mine like... maybe once every few months. It doesn't get greasy like normal hair and doesn't need to be washed very often. When I do wash it, I make sure not to get the shaft (top part) wet because the glue can wash off a little. I just wash them in my sink to make it easier.
4. When I do wash it, I usually soak it in a deep conditioner to keep it soft and I use normal hair products (like heat protection) to keep it healthy for as long as possible.
5. Right after you wash them, do not brush them out right away! They will probably be pretty tangled and you don't want to break or damage it by brushing them when they're wet. Wait for them to be dry or at least almost dry before brushing them. I would also recommend using a wet brush to get as little breakage as possible. This is the wet brush I like.
So while I do LOVE my homemade halo hair extensions, it does have some downfalls. You cannot do updos with them (RIP long beautiful pony tails) But I think I might get some clip ins to fix that! I usually leave my hair down and curl it anyways so this hasn't been too much of a problem for me personally!

Wow, this is awesome! Thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteI hope it helps!! I loveee these kind of extensions :)
Deleteinteresting! i keep wanting to try extensions for volume rather than length.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah they're so great for volume and sooooo easy to make!
DeleteI have never dealt with hair extensions before but I would love to add a little move volume! My hair is so thin.
ReplyDeleteI love extensions! And if you get the right color you can't even tell they're there. I also really like the thickness it gives my hair, I feel like mine is really thin without them.
DeleteWow! I didn't even think this was possible! Great tutorial!

Thank you! They are soooo easy to make and so much cheaper than buying premade ones!
DeleteI'm going to have to watch this video later! I bought some clip-ins from Sally's back before my wedding but I never wear them because they don't match my hair anymore (and it would look like I have a mullet until my hair gets a bit longer).
ReplyDeleteI have to dye mine to match otherwise it just looks bad haha I started wearing them when my hair was at my collar bone and luckily they blended in pretty well. hahaha the mullet look is so in!! ;)
DeleteSuch a great idea! I have super long hair atm but I'm considering getting it cut and so will probably have to get some extensions! Great post! x

Thank you! I bet you would look soooo pretty with short hair! But your long hair is super pretty, too :)
DeleteMy favorite part was "bam bam bam" lol. You're the cutest. I have never heard of this, but that's such a good idea! They probably don't hurt like clip in's do. I used to be into super long hair (and long pony tails) so I used extensions a lot but once they got all tangly and I threw them away. My hairs too short now anyways, but I should grow it out. I actually think that every time I see your hair. I get hair jealous of you ;)

hahah gotta throw in those BAM POWs! They really don't hurt at all! Sometimes they feel kinda heavy but I figure all extensions do. Your hair looks super good short, though!! I loveee it!! pshhh you're so nice! I wish all this hair was real! thank heavens for extensions :)

DeleteNever thought about making my own hair extensions, but when I get home, I am chopping my hair off, so this might be an option for those days I miss my long hair!
